  • Poverty

What is poor? Is there a difference between poor and just living paycheck to paycheck? Do you think that most people that are poor are that way because of something they are doing, because of the nature of our society or some other reason? How do think our "poor" in the USA compare to the "poor" in other nations?

I do believe that we have poor in the US and other "wealthy" countries, but there is so much more extreme poverty in the third world countries the USA does NOT compair.  I know that we have homeless etc, and I am a very strong advocate for the poor and homeless here in the US, but I have lived in Dominican Republic and have seen the extreme poor.  It is beyond imagination, it is beyond what pictures can say.  Unfortunately I could not get my scanner to work today, but I found some photos on the net and they pretty much look like the pictures I would have scanned and put up here.  I will share them now, then after you take a look, I will share some more about my views on poverty.

Yes, there is a difference to being poor and living pay check to pay check.  The poor have no pay check, they live on scraps of what is given to them, or what they dig for, or simply nothing.  Sometimes they go without food.  They do what they have to do to survive.  I am not one for advocating stealing, of course not, that is a sin, but I do understand why it is done by people who have nothing.  Most of the time, they have been left on the street to fend for themselves and are not taught right from wrong, and they are in despirate need for food or other things.  Here in the USA there are places and orginizations that help the poor.  It is available in almost every city in the US.  In third world countries they do not have this.  I have been there, I have seen people living in boxes along the banks of the river because they had no where to go.  In Santo Domingo, every day I would cross a bridge and I could look down and it was like there were people living on top of other people in cardboard and tin shacks.  They were so poor, they really didn't have a place to live.  It is so crowded there.  Many times people that lived in these places did not have electricity.  And they would have families of like 6-10 people all living in this small shack with a dirt floor.  I have one friend who has 6 brothers and he is from Costa Rica, they only had one ball to play with, no other toys.  They didn't have shoes because there was no reason to have them.  When they had a reason, then the one pair of shoes that was in the family would be given to that one person for the time that the shoes were needed.  They lived in a house with a dirt floor.  This was a better house than what they had lived in before.  I am also reading a book called "The Rabbit Proof Fence" and it is describing the Abariginal people and they are poor, they lived off the land, day to day.  Back to the people in Dominican Republic that lived off of that bridge, they recently had a hurricaine and I highly doubt that many of those people are still alive.  There was several towns in the country that are now gone, all the inhabitants and the buildings etc are all washed away from the flooding that came with the hurricaine.

The interesting fact that I find about these extremely poor people is that they are much more rich in spirit than the more wealthy people are.  When I have visited my friends in Dominican Republic, they will give you anything and everything you need while you are there.  They are much more hospitable with the little they have than people who have much.  I think this is very sad.  I would hope that people who have more would be more giving and share more of their wealth than they do.  I know that I am guilty of this also.  I am not pointing fingers at anyone in particular, I am pointing it at myself also.  I get so busy with my day to day things, that I get focused on the here and now, and only on my problems and things I have to do, and I don't stop to think about all the poverty in the world.  I know many people wouldn't be able to handle going to a third world country and seeing what is there.  It is difficult.  This is not to say that the country isn't a wonderful country.  It is.  It is beautiful, and just wonderful to visit.  I wish I could go more often than I do.  I enjoy reading about what Mother Theresa did in Calcutta and admire her for all her work with the extreme poor.  Many of the extreme poor in India are looked down upon to the point that it is actually abuse and the poor have such a negative self image, that they can't understand why any of the nuns at the mission where Mother Theresa was would want to look at them, let alone touch them and want to help them and care for them and show them the love of Christ.  I believe that is what all Christians are called to do.  Share the love of Christ with everyone.

I do not believe that all are poor because of something they have done or something they have not done.  They are that way out of circumstance mainly.  Many are born into it and once you are in it, if you do not have assistance to get out of it, you won't.  There has to be something that will break they cycle.  Many of the students that I have had stay at my house through the CASS program (one of our very good goverment programs that has been cut )  were from this type of extremely poor circumstances.  They are now out of it and helping their families to get out of it too.  They recieved the oppurtunity because they had excelled in school.  Our government and their goverment jointly sent them to school here in the states and then once they earned their degree, they went back home to help and serve and teach their own people how to get out of the extreme poverty and gave them the skills to do this.  This isn't something where they come here and then simply stay.  One of the requirements is to go back to their countries.

I do believe that people can get out of poverty to an extent, but as we all have to realize that there will always be the poor amoung us, it says so in the Bible.  I do not believe that means we are to sit idely by and watch because it will always be.  I believe that God commands us to love each other not simply with emotions, but with actions too.  The comments made by Anna in regards to a devotional she read, are right on.  We can not get salvation simply through works.  Works are a manifestation of our Faith and Salvation.  They go hand in hand and you can't have one without the other.

  • My worth

You are so much more than you can see!
You are so much more than you think you are!
You are so much more than you have heard about yourself!

Complete the following sentences with the first thing that comes to you.  Remember to be honest and make sure you think good thoughts.  If you can't think of anything to complete the sentence, make it up!

Use your imagination!  If your thought is 50% believable to you, life will make up the other 50% to support you!

    Recognize-YOUR BEAUTY
    I am beautiful because:

I have a good loving heart.  I am caring and I see people with loving in my heart and that makes me beautiful, or so I am told.  I still have a hard time seeing this, I am working on it though

    Recognize-YOUR SPIRIT
    I am spiritual because:

I love being in communion with God.  I communicate with Him almost continually.  I think on God and what He would want me to do and how to act.  I pray informal and formal prayers and stive to trust Him in every aspect of my life.  I have smelled and felt the presence of God.  This is not because I am special or anything at all, it is probably because I was slipping in my Faith.  I can only guess.  But God chose to bless me on those times, and I was so undeserving.  I mention it because I am more spiritual because of this.

    Recognize-YOUR POWER
    I am powerful because:

I have the strength of God on my side.  I am working to change my life for the better with God's help.  I am powerful because I have the support of my friends and thier prayers.

    Recognize-YOUR GREATNESS
    I am great because:

I hope that any greatness that I might have is there becuase of Jesus' light shining through me.  I don't think of myself as being great.  I am simply the way I am.  I have a very difficult time with this because I want so badly to put others before myself, yet I do it to the point of being unhealthy about it.  I strive to be a good person, the one that God wants me to be and God does not want us to think of ourselves as better than anyone.  I am thinking that this isn't what this is saying, it is simply saying pick out something of infinite worth about ourselves.... so here goes.... I feel other's pain.

    Recognize-YOUR STRENGTH:
    I am beautiful because

I have really pretty hair.  It is auborn, shoulder length, thick and has some wave in it, but not a lot of curls.  It has spiral curls at the base of my neck and near my ears... just the perfect places.  My dh says that since I have lost so much weight he is starting to see my cheekbones and he thinks I am beautiful   I am also strong because I am tenacious, and persistant to a fault sometimes.  I am also stubborn, so when I set my mind on doing something, I usually go about doing it.

    Recognize-YOUR TALENTS:
    I am beautiful because

I am talented in that I can be creative.  I have lost some of it, or I should say I have lost the space and time to be creative like I used to be.  I used to sew and do handcrafts, but I have so many little hands that want to help me, it isn't feasable at this time.  My creativity is now on computers.  I do graphics, html, webpages, stationary, writing and anything else I can get my hands on lol

    Recognize-YOUR ABILITIES:
    I am beautiful because

My abilities to care for others, and my empathy.  It is difficult at times for me that I can feel other's pain, it hurts.... but then I also know more of what to do to help... sometimes.  Most times people just need someone to listen to them, and give supportive feed back.  Sometimes God gives me the words to say to help and other times I need to be quiet.  I have an ability to love others and be kind to others.  I have an ability to learn.  I love to read and study the Bible and studies about the Bible.  I love to learn!

I SEE THE GOOD IN ME
What do you see in me?

What do I see in me?  I see someone who is loving and kind and striving to be the person that God wants me to be in all areas of my life.  I am striving to change the things I have been convicted about and areas that are not healthy in my life.  I hope and pray others can see this too, to know that Jesus is in my life.  I don't want any glory for it, to the contrary, I simply want others to see Christ's love through me.  If God wants me to be the one that plants the seed, then I hope and pray that I can be the preson that God wants of me so that I may do His will.

  • Food & Emotional Journal

I was pretty happy today, frustrated that I couldn't do more around the house, but I know my limits.

I didn't really get mad at anything or even frustrated.  I tried really hard to listen only to what God has to say about me.  I succeeded at this today, other days it is harder.

I wrote some of what I ate in my previous post.  In addition to that I ate 3 pieces of pizza and I did plan on drinking some Diet Pepsi, but then I ended up only drinking water.  I guess I will save my DP for when I really *need* it

I need to also say that I had hoped to get some exercising done, but I didn't  I went up and down the stairs quite a few times and walked around the house quite a bit while I was straightening up.  I hope to feel better tomorrow so that I can do more around the house and go outside and do some sort of exercising.

  • What I did today:

well, I did some of what I wanted to do

I straightened some on the kitchen (there is more)

I loaded the dishwasher and am running it, got the remainder of the dishes ready to be loaded after this one is done.  I started a load of laundry.  Moved some items that are going to be sold on ebay close to my puter so I can take a picture of them and get them sold.  I straightened my boys' room, picked up the bathroom upstairs.  Took the recyclables out.

Then my back was killing me and so were my legs.  It is a bad fibro day for me, but wanted to not be so unproductive as my body was telling me to be lol.... I breaked for a bit then I did another load of dishes in the dishwasher, cooked another pizza and did another load of laundry.  Then I put the boys to bed, baths, meds, dressed, pray, and story.  Then I always spend time talking to Nate before he goes to sleep.  I think it helps him to relax so he can sleep.  He is so scared of things.  He also has PTSD I am sure of it, but he hasn't been diagnosed with it.  He was put on Resperadol yesterday to try and help with his nightmares.  I hope and pray it helps.  His nightmares are so bad and he really can't describe what they are.  He says he doesn't know the words.  We pray over him every night and I can't even imagine what his dreams would be like if we didn't do everything we already do to help him have good dreams.  There wasn't a night that he didn't have nightmares until just recently there have been a couple.

Prior to this I was up until 3:30am couldn't sleep, and then finally went to sleep and slept until 10am when we got a phone call from someone who we are interested in buying their vehicle.  I did some puter stuff and then was conking out again by 11:30 or 12 and got a phone call from Mom saying the boys needed to come home for a bit because they needed a break from them and Eli had a bit of an attitude.  I told Eli he needed to rest a bit so he laid down for 1 1/2 hours and Nate slept for 2.  I slept with Nate lol.... then I am up and still feeling like I could go back to bed.  My legs hurt and my back hurts.  I am just whipped.  My fibro is worse today and yesterday I am thinking it is the prednisone.  Jacquie, you said your Lupus gets worse with prednisone?  I thought people took prednisone for Lupus.... now I am confused.  Anyway, I am on a group that helps to motivate to clean, I happened to get an email just as I was writing all of this to another group saying I didn't want to be unproductive today..... So anyway, I got up and did the above...... Now I am back to resting by my puter lol.....

I think here in a bit, I am going to do some sort of exercise too, not too much as I don't like pain lol....

So far today I have eaten 2 pieces of bread with butter on them, about 10 saltines.  Drank lots of water, and have my Diet Pepsi here to drink.  With being on Prednisone, I don't really want to think about trying to get off of the caffeine as that will give me a really bad headache and I don't want to deal with that on top of everything else right now lol

    The Good Life

The one fact that I would cry from every housetop is this: the Good Life is waiting for us- here and now.

    -B F Skinner

    2.  Helen and Scott Nearing went in search of the good life: "simplicity, freedom from anxiety, an opportunity to be useful and live harmoniously" and they did just that.   Helen later wrote a memoir called  Loving and Leaving the Good Life.  In this book she made some suggestions for living life less stressfully.

Comment on each suggestion (or as many as you would like).  How well do you follow each one of them?  Which ones do you need to work on? Comment however you would like :)

œ  Do the best you can, whatever arises.

Sometimes I do this, and sometimes I am ashamed to say, I just do enough to get by, but then it usually bothers me and I have to go back and do it right.  Sometimes I do the best that I can right then, but it isn't satisfactory to me and still have to go back and correct it if that is a possible.  I tend to be a perfectionist about some things, the things that are really important to me.  These things are not necessarily important to anyone else lol... it drives my husband nuts because there are things that he thinks are more important that I really don't care about, but I personally think it is a difference in personality.  I do try to do better in those areas though because I know it will make him happy and I like it when he is happy because I love him so.  I don't *have* to do it that way, I mean, no one is forcing me to or threatening me, it is simply that I want to do things that will make him happy.  The reason I stress that here is because it was very different in my previous non-marriage, I tried to make him happy and walked on egg shells to continue to keep peace simply because I was scared to do otherwise.  Anyway.... back to my list

œ  Be at peace with yourself.

This is a very difficult thing for me because there are so many areas that I am currently working on.  I am trying to work on my depression and anxiety and trying to be the best person I can be.  I have been accused of being a basket case and so I feel like I have to get control of my emotions or something really bad is going to happen and I don't even want to think about that.  There are too many things that can go wrong right now.  I also am working on cleaning more and doing more in the house whether I feel like it or not.  There are going to be days I just simply can't do as much as I would like, but I really need to try and do something even on those days.  I haven't been doing that, and like my dh has said, there are so many days that I feel badly that I am going to still have to do things on those days too and save the relaxing days for really really bad days because I will have those also.  I know that he is simply saying this because we have to work together to get things done as he is the same way with his health problems.  I am also working on becoming the Prov 31 women and this is such a challenge for me.  I am doing a Bible study by Elizabeth George on the Proverbs 31 women called Discovering the Treasures of a Godly Woman with Kathy.  I see there are so many areas that I need working on and I am trying to do that and pray and be in God's word more.  I am trying very hard to become a better person and I have so many areas to work on   I also am working on loosing the weight that I have gained over the years.  I have some things I am to be doing to be accountable.  This journal is being used for many areas to document my progress in many areas, some private and some public.  There are so many other areas that I need to work on, but this is what I am doing right now, if I do too much more I will go on overload.  I might even go on overload with this, but I am hoping not.

œ  Find a job you enjoy.

Currently I am unemployed and I was working on going to school to become a wound care nurse, but I ran out of money because of the lack of a job.  I am also trying to become a freelance writer and I have done some of that, but it is still not making enough money to support my family so I am going to go back to work.  I have a job pending, in 1 of 3 areas at one company.  I have applied for all of them and I know that I will get one, it is simply a question as to which one.  That part of it is out of my control and I am relying on God to provide the best job for me.  I know he will.  This is an area that I don't have any problems with allowing God to work in my life.  There are others that I struggle more with, but I know that he will do it as he has always provided for my family.  I probably need work in this area also, but I have not felt conviction to change so I am at peace about this.

œ  Contact nature every day; feel the earth under your feet.

I don't go outside much in the summer because I hate the heat so badly.  I need to start walking every day for my health and my weight.  I want to, I just haven't found a good time to do it.  The best time for me emotionally and physically is the afternoon, but it is the heat of the day so that isn't good either.  Also right now it is harvest time and so I have been avoiding breathing outside lol  I am horribly allergic to the mold that comes off of the wheat when it is harvested and so it is really bad now, and that has contributed to this allergy problem I have been having.  Harvest is my favorite time of the year, I love the way it smells and the way the golden dust flies off of the combines.  I simply think it is a beautiful time of year.  Now and fall are the best times.... but the worst time for my allergies.  Go figure.  I used to keep a garden with veggies and everything, but I haven't done that for several years.  I would like to have one again, or at least have some plants growing in flower beds etc, but I simply do not have enough time that is good for doing things with this fibro stuff that I need to find time to do this again.  I love the smell of dirt too, it is so sweet   I like growing things and watching the buds turn into fruit and watching God's handywork.  I still enjoy this, but I like being a part of it.  I will do it again someday, maybe when the boys are older and can help more than they can right now.  When they are older I can torture them like my parents did me and make me pull weeds.  That is the part I hate and it is simply so overwhelming lol

œ  Take physical exercise through hard work; through gardening or walking.

See, this is what I was talking about.  One of the things I really like to do when I am stressed is go and dig with a shovel and move dirt.  I know that is probably really strange but I get to smell the earth, it is hard work and it really helps me to get out the stress, but lately I haven't been doing that either as I really don't have the stamina to do that as "lazy" as I have been.  I am so out of shape it is pitiful.  I am working toward doing better in this area also.

œ  Don't worry; live one day at a time.

This is one of the areas that I am working on in becoming a Prov 31 woman.  Anxiety is wrong and it is not a good trait to have.  I am to be prepared and know that I am prepared and not worry about it.  Also I need to give it all to God and let Him do what He needs to do in my life and not worry about it.  This is very hard for me.  I wonder.... does worrying come in genetics?  Because my grandmother and my father are both worriers and so am I.  Only I try very hard not to let it show and I internalize it so much that it causes problems for me I think.  One of the areas for an example is that I am scared of storms, I don't mean little thunder boomers, but the big ones (see here for the kind of storms I am talking about)  My father always made such a big deal over them, and I understand why, but it really scared my brother and me to see our big strong father scared.  This is something that I have worked very hard at, and every time it thunders or we are in a severe thunderstorm warning, I don't show any fear and make sure my boys know that when you take the precautions you need to, there is nothing to be scared of.  I hope that I am teaching a healthy type of fear, so that they will be prepared for things, but not sit and "stew" over it.  There was one time that a big storm came and when my non-marriage ex and I lived in an older house that only had a cellar,  I freaked.  I heard the "train" sound and heard our house creak... I knew what that meant and I just KNEW that when we went upstairs that the house would be gone and I started to go into hysterics, and he of course took that opportunity to slap me   But, it was okay because I need to calm down.  The house was still there, but all the pictures on the wall were all tilted in the same direction, like they had all been subjected to a sort of suction that pulled the corners up... hmmmmmm

œ  Share something every day with someone else.

If this means share your thoughts every day with someone else, I do... my dh, he is usually the one that gets the most of it   I also do a lot of email and this blogging is wonderful.  I have tried several times to keep a journal and I don't know why, but I never really did very good at it, never kept a diary either.  This way is wonderful and it is really working for me this time.  So, this is an area I am at peace with.  I also talk to my boys much more than they probably even want to hear lol

œ  Be kind to all creatures.

Of course!  Like another said, I don't remember, I am sorry, I am to all creatures except the buggy kind in my house.  I do save ladybugs though, I will not kill them even if they are in the house.  I take them back outside.  Here recently we saved some birdies and a rabbit.  A mamma barn swallow had been trying to make a nest on my parent's front porch in the light near the door and my dad kept taking the nest down   I didn't know about this, until after the fact.  This poor momma had been working so hard at building a safe place for her babies and my dad was causing her more work..... Anyway, one day I went out on our front porch and there was a nest mudded to our house on the top of the outdoor light.  Actually my friend had told me that she liked my nest, that it was a very unique decoration, and so I specifically went out to look.  It is a good thing I did, because the night before my dad had noticed it and was going to knock it down again.  When I mentioned it to my oldest ds he told me that my dad was going to knock it down.  I called him at work that very minute and told him that before he did it we needed to talk lol... that night he called me up and I asked him to please not knock it down, there were eggs in there and that poor mamma was desperate and tired and trying to care for her babies.  He consented to wait and so now we have baby birdies that the boys just simply love   The rabbit story is that one night I was sleeping.  I should back up, our room is in the basement and we have a window well so it is fire safety accurate or something like that lol... we have a grate on top of the hole, it has about 5 inch gaps in them and so this one night I heard something hitting that window and it really scared me.  I got up and checked all over the house because I couldn't tell where it was coming from first of all and then when I could tell where it was coming from I was scared someone was trying to break in.  Part of my PTSD is having unreasonable fears lol... Anyway... we finally determined that there was an animal in the hole.  My dad (the animal rescuer) got down in the whole with his gloves on and caught that small rabbit and set it free.  My mom says, indignantly, that the rabbit didn't even stop to say thanks... it simply ran off lol

  • Update

Yesterday was a bad day for me, it was really difficult to think of any blessings the way it all went.  I did think of some in the am and consentrated on them during the day becuase that is what kept me afloat.  I didn't write them down and I should have, but I was so sick and felt just all around yucky that I didn't.  I could barely consentrate.  So anyway, here we are again.  I had a better day as far as emotions, but I have felt horrible.  I have been sleeping all of the morning and some this afternoon.  I will be going to bed again this eve after I am done with blogging because I have been struggling so much with so many histamines in my body that after two weeks of it, I am finally crashing and my body is saying... hey wait, this is just too much.  The doctor put me on prednisone yesterday, a very high dose and so that has helped with the itching and the histamines, but it has really hurt my fibromyalgia and I hurt all over much more than I have been and so that is difficult too.  I have still done some of the housework etc that I need to do, but not as much as I would like to have done.  I have just been to miserable.  That is partly why I am just now getting to blogging.  I have been wanting to all day, but haven't.  This may not make much sense since I am not very focused... not sure why, maybe I can blame it on fibro or prednisone, but anyway.  I want to write what my blessings are today, my circle of words the second half and then write down my emotional and food journal, my cleaning that I have done, and my excersize journal, but we will see how far I actually get lol

    Week 26

    Cooking Companions

No one who cooks cooks alone. Even at at her most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, the advice and menus of cooks present, the wisdom of cookbook writers.

    -Laurie Colwin

    1.  Who taught you how to cook? Where do you get recipes and ideas for meals?  What is the one thing that you cook the best?  Do you have an item that you always seem to make for pot lucks and/or parties?

My mom was the main person who taught me how to cook.  I watched her cook and asked all kinds of questions growing up.  When I was young like about 2 or 3, I liked to lick the beaters or bowl when she was done.  I still like this (but it isn't a good plan for me )  I have an old photo somewhere that I wanted to scan and post of me licking the bowl when I was small.  Then as I grew older I would help with making small things and measuring the flour or other ingredients.  My mom stayed at home with us and so I learned a lot of things from her.  I wasn't in a day care or preschool until I was 4 and then only part time.  Therefore I saw my mom being domestic, and learned from her.  She doesn't think I learned from her, because I am not as good of housekeeper as she is , but I am trying to realize and wish she would also, that I am a different person and I will clean differently and I will cook differently too.

We also had a very large garden and part of my chores were to pick the veggetables and then care for them.  The beans were to be snapped and the peas were to be out of the pods etc.  Then I would help my mom can quarts of veggies.  Then we would sit around the supper table eating and waiting for the lids to pop meaning they had sealed.  It was sort of a game to see who could hear and we would count them as they popped

Then when I was in middle school, I started attending the 4-H club and I was in the cooking classes every year.  I learned to make other things during that time that my mom didn't make.  I learned how to make simple recipes and cookies and pies from scratch.

Then in highschool and late middle school, I was in home-ec and learned about making other things such as cakes and meat dishes, yet nothing too fancy.

When I was in college, I learned how to cook on a pop-corn popper and an iron with wax paper so it wouldn't get dirty.   I also lived with an Amish family for 2 months one year and learned how to cook everything from scratch.  That is how I learned how to make bread.  I love the bread that I make when I use their recipe and follow the directions that she gave me.  She also taught me how to make Amish church peanut butter which is the most delightful thing I have tasted.  They used to send it to me in care packages, but that has stopped now   but I really don't need to be eating that either.  The other thing I learned to do was to cook deer meat and to make homemade canned deer bologna, which is nothing like the bologna we buy in the store, it is more like summer sausage.  It is really good grilled over a gas stove in a cheese sandwich on the homemade bread

Then in college I lived in Dominican Republic for 3 months and learned to cook like they do there.  I learned to make con con which is the crispy part of the rice along the sides of the pan that is really good and has it's own unique flavor.  I learned to make several different dishes there which has also influenced my cooking now.

I know there is another part to my circle of words writing, but I am getting tired and I think I am going to finish this tomorrow.
